"I grew up in a place where social status was as important as what you ate for breakfast or what was the weather looking like and crime rates were really low. Streets were clean enough to walk across barefoot and children could run around without a worry in the world. But while that land was so like a dream, it seems at some point the universe decided it was time for us to wake up. Things broke and were lost, people died, nature raged, monsters appeared, the sky became a pool of darkness and the flare of people taking people’s lives lurks in the shadows. I lost my child, and found myself as mother to children who had none. As a healer who lives to fix broken things, I saw myself and my loved ones being broken over and over. I saw caring souls being hunted as tributes – mine as well. And along the years, the world that was my safe haven was also the nest of my worst fears.
Due to that, I fear I have lost that sense of safety ‘home’ brings. To me, what brings rest is not a place but the people in it. It’s seeing those whom I hold dear can still smile in that sincere way children do. It’s what keeps me sane. Anywhere where that can happen is home to me – and in this world far away from home, it’s exactly what this little place gave me, over a hundred."
